The final day of the one week long interactive session and oversight functions of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport on agencies and stakeholders under its purview, by 13th October, 2023, led the committee to Lekki Deep Sea Port.

The journey to the sea port was torturous because of the heavy traffic occasioned by the ongoing road reconstruction on the axis. However, it ended up being a journey worth the stress.

The committee was received at the port by the Managing Director, who took them through its operations, which commenced with the berth of the first vessel, in April, 2023. He noted that the port is the deepest in West Africa and can berth bigger vessels than any other port in Nigeria, as it’s quay is 16.5 metres deep.

The port has a build, operate and transfer arrangement, was conccessioned to China harbour for an initial period of twenty-five years (renewable though).

He also gave the committee a tour of the port. The committee members were thrilled by the tour and fascinated boarding one of the tug boats of the port.
