NSML MD Highlights Need for Maritime Training as Industry Faces Global Challenges.

The Managing Director of NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML), Abdulkadir Ahmed, emphasized the critical role of maritime training and capacity development in addressing the industry’s complex challenges.
This took place at the 2025 Annual Conference of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) in Lagos.
The MD NSML,Ahmed,was duly represented by the NSML’s Chief Financial Officer, Mutiu Olayiwola, who stressed that investing in human capital is essential for compliance, safety, and operational excellence in the maritime sector.
He pointed out that the maritime industry is experiencing significant transformations due to environmental regulations, digitalization, and the rising standards for cybersecurity and crew welfare.
Ahmed remarked on the game-changing environmental mandates of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), such as the 2020 Sulphur Cap and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), which necessitate shipowners and operators to transition to greener technologies and energy-efficient practices.
He highlighted NSML’s Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE) in Bonny, Rivers State, which provides UK-accredited and STCW 2010 compliant training for Nigerian seafarers. The centre, equipped with advanced simulation systems, offers real-time training in areas including bridge operations, engine room dynamics, cargo handling, and crisis management.
The MD stated that this initiative is pivotal in reducing Nigeria’s reliance on foreign certifications while bolstering the nation’s broader maritime goals.
He called upon government, private sector stakeholders, and the media to collaborate in fostering a stronger and more resilient maritime future for Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
Ahmed praised AMJON for its essential contribution to shaping public dialogue and narrative in the maritime sector, asserting that the transformation of the maritime industry needs to be articulated from within.
