AMJON Hails Nigeria’s Return to IMO Council, Commends Oyetola and NIMASA.

The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) has applauded Nigeria’s re-election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council under Category C for the 2026–2027 biennium, marking the country’s first successful bid in 14 years.
In a statement signed by Acting President Vera Osokpo and Public Relations Officer Uzor Odigbo, AMJON described the development as a historic milestone that restores Nigeria’s place in global maritime governance.
The association credited the achievement to the leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the strategic role played by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). According to AMJON, Oyetola’s sustained diplomatic engagement with IMO member states and clear articulation of Nigeria’s maritime reform agenda were crucial to securing the highly competitive seat.
AMJON further commended NIMASA for providing the technical and institutional support that strengthened the country’s campaign, noting improvements in maritime safety administration, regulatory compliance, capacity development, and enhanced security in the Gulf of Guinea as key contributors to Nigeria’s elevated global standing.
The association emphasized that Nigeria’s election into the IMO Council reflects the nation’s improved maritime security profile and growing adherence to international standards. It added that the renewed Council membership positions Nigeria to play a more influential role in global shipping and maritime policy formulation, while also amplifying the interests of Africa and other developing maritime nations.
AMJON urged the Ministry and NIMASA to take full advantage of the Council seat by deepening ongoing reforms, strengthening regional collaborations, and attracting greater investment into the maritime sector. The group also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at advancing the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
