The Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE), operated by NSML, is strengthening its position as a premier institution for maritime training, research, and consultancy in West Africa, offering internationally accredited programmes and advanced professional development opportunities for maritime professionals.

Located on Bonny Island in Rivers State, the MCOE serves as a one stop centre for maritime expertise, equipped with state of the art simulators and modern training facilities designed to meet global industry standards.

The institute delivers a growing portfolio of mandatory and specialized maritime courses aimed at enhancing the competence of seafarers and maritime professionals across Nigeria, West Africa, and beyond.

The centre has earned international recognition through full accreditation by DNV under key global standards, including ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management Systems, DNV Maritime Simulator Centre standards, and DNV Maritime Training Centre standards.

In a significant milestone, the MCOE has secured licensing from the Nautical Institute to deliver Dynamic Positioning (DP) programmes, including the Dynamic Positioning Induction Course, Dynamic Positioning Simulator Course, Dynamic Revalidation Induction Course, and Dynamic Vessel Maintenance Revalidation Induction Course. The institute is currently the only training centre in West Africa with this accreditation.

The centre also offers a range of courses accredited by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), widely regarded as the global benchmark for maritime training. These include the Basic Gas Tanker Course, Dynamic Positioning, Human Element Leadership and Management, Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS), High Voltage Training – Management (HV-M), and High Voltage Training – Operational (HV-O).

Beyond training, the MCOE has made significant contributions to workforce development through its flagship Seafarers Continuous Development Programme (SCDP). The programme provides sea-time opportunities, consultancy services, and support for obtaining internationally recognized Certificates of Competency (CoC).

According to NSML, 225 cadets have successfully completed sea-time training under the programme, while an additional 54 cadets are currently enrolled in maritime colleges or serving onboard vessels as they work toward obtaining their Certificates of Competency. The initiative is delivered in collaboration with key industry stakeholders, including the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron.

The programme is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical sea-going experience, creating pathways for Nigerian cadets to enter the global maritime workforce while supporting NSML’s objective of maintaining an 85 percent Nigerian workforce onboard the vessels it manages.

In addition to training and workforce development, the MCOE provides maritime research, intelligence, and consultancy services for a broad range of projects. Its expertise covers shipbuilding supervision, commercial evaluations, dry-docking oversight, vessel management, and crew management. NSML says the centre has established a reputation as a reliable partner throughout the vessel lifecycle, from keel laying to final delivery.

Looking ahead, the MCOE is preparing for further growth. Supported by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), the centre has commenced plans for a major facility expansion project. The development is expected to increase training capacity, broaden course offerings, and enhance service delivery through a larger and more advanced facility.

NSML says the expansion reflects its commitment to building local maritime capacity, supporting the Nigerian maritime industry, and delivering world-class training and consultancy services that meet evolving global demands.
