The Tanzanian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Selestine Kakale, has described the launch of Air Tanzania’s direct flights between Dar es Salaam and Lagos as a strategic move to bridge the geographic distance between the two nations, reduce ticketing costs, and boost connectivity for travelers.

Speaking at a dinner event held in Lagos to celebrate the inaugural flight, Dr. Kakale stated that the new route is a vital step toward enhancing economic ties, tourism, and cultural exchange between Nigeria and Tanzania.

“This flight is more than just a new route—it’s a solution to eliminate unnecessary taxes on ticketing and simplify travel for passengers between our countries,” the High Commissioner said. “It opens up fresh avenues for Nigerian entrepreneurs and traders to explore business opportunities, while also making it easier for tourists to experience Tanzania’s rich natural and cultural heritage.”

Highlighting the importance of the bilateral relationship, Dr. Kakale noted that Nigeria—Africa’s largest economy—plays a central role on the continent, with Lagos serving as a vital economic hub in the ECOWAS region. He emphasized that both nations share common interests in infrastructure development, railways, tourism, education, and healthcare.

“Nigeria and Tanzania are natural partners. We see this flight as a platform for people-to-people interactions. We want Nigerians to understand the benefits of flying Air Tanzania and to experience firsthand what our country has to offer,” he said.

Dr. Kakale revealed that over 5,000 Nigerian tourists visited Tanzania in 2024, particularly destinations like Zanzibar, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the country’s renowned game reserves—more than from any other African country. He expressed confidence that the number would more than double with the introduction of direct flights.

The High Commissioner also commended the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, for fostering media cooperation between Nigeria and the Tanzanian Broadcasting Corporation.

In his remarks, Professor Godius Kahyarara, Permanent Secretary of the Tanzanian Ministry of Transportation, echoed the High Commissioner’s sentiments, stating that the direct air link is a symbol of shared commitment to regional integration and economic collaboration.

“Given Nigeria’s large population and resource-rich economy, the potential for investment and partnership is enormous,” said Prof. Kahyarara. “We have invested heavily in key sectors including ports, oil and gas, tourism, and commerce. The Dar es Salaam,Lagos route is not just about logistics,it is a path toward shared prosperity.”

He noted that Tanzania has procured 60 aircraft to support its aviation expansion and that Air Tanzania will operate three weekly flights to Lagos on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

“We invite Nigerians to explore the beauty of Tanzania, from the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro to vibrant tourist destinations across our country,” Kahyarara added. “This is a new chapter for both our nations.”

He also pointed to cultural ties, referencing the popularity of Nigerian films and Nollywood stars in Tanzania as evidence of the deepening social connections between the countries.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who also spoke at the event, described the launch as more than a commercial route—it is a diplomatic bridge.

“This direct service between Lagos and Dar es Salaam marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to integrate African markets and communities,” Keyamo said. “It facilitates not just the movement of people, but the flow of ideas, innovation, trade, and investment.”

He emphasized that the new route allows Nigerian business owners to tap into East African markets and brings Tanzanian travelers and investors closer to Nigeria’s energetic business climate.

The inaugural flight ceremony was well-attended by government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and members of the aviation and tourism sectors from both countries.

With the launch of this direct route, Air Tanzania is positioning itself as a key player in African regional aviation, while opening up new horizons for collaboration between Nigeria and Tanzania.
