IGP Lauds Police Wives for Their Crucial Role in Enhancing National Security

The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) through various welfare and empowerment initiatives aimed at strengthening police families and bolstering national security. This commitment was highlighted during a courtesy visit to IGP Olatunji Disu at the Force Headquarters on Tuesday April 14, 2026.
During the visit, POWA President, Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, described the engagement as both symbolic and strategic, emphasizing the Association’s role as a vital partner in reinforcing the foundational role of families within the Nigeria Police Force. “We come not merely in protocol, but in partnership,” she said, underscoring that the strength of the Force is closely linked to the well-being of its families.
Mrs. Disu commended the IGP’s leadership for its focus on reform, accountability, and institutional strengthening, aligning POWA’s initiatives with this vision. She detailed the Association’s ongoing efforts, such as a free eye care initiative that has provided vision support services to over 1,000 police families, improving their quality of life and productivity. Plans are underway to expand this program nationwide.
In her address, she outlined POWA’s strategic priorities, which include mental and emotional health support, economic empowerment, education and youth development, national unity, and enhancing welfare systems. “When families are strengthened, institutions are steadied; and when institutions are steady, nations are secure,” she emphasized.
In response, IGP Olatunji Disu expressed heartfelt appreciation to the officers’ wives, recognizing them as the unseen backbone of the Force and pivotal to its effectiveness. He described the visit as a powerful display of solidarity, characterizing it as “family visiting family.”
The IGP acknowledged the unique sacrifices made by police families in light of the uncertainties tied to the profession. He reflected on the daily farewells between officers and their families, stating, “Every day, we tell you, ‘I’ll see you tonight,’ but deep down, we know it is not guaranteed.” He stressed the indispensable role of officers’ wives in maintaining stability at home, highlighting that their contributions are essential to the success of police officers.
“You hold things together while we are away, and your sacrifices are not taken for granted,” he added, thanking them for their significant role in raising children and creating a loving home environment. The IGP reaffirmed that family support makes the challenging nature of police work more manageable, stating, “You make our homes worth coming back to.”
